Historical background



Charles IV (12/11/1748-19/01/1819) is the second son of Charles III and Maria Amalia of Saxony. He married Marie-Louise of Parma (1751 -1819) in 1765. The Spanish royal family at the time was immortalized by Goya. He succeeded his father in 1788. It's Godoy, his favorite governs in fact Spain with his wife. Returned to the French orbit after 1795, he allied himself with Napoleon and was defeated at Trafalgar. After the uprising of Aranjuez (March 1808), he abdicated in favor of his eldest son, Ferdinand VII, retracted, and then gave his kingdom to Napoleon installed his brother, Joseph Bonaparte. Charles IV lived in exile in Compiègne, Marseille, and finally to Naples with his brother Ferdinand IV, King of the Two Sicilies where he died in 1819.
