Historical background

MEXICO - LOUIS PHILIP

(1838)

The independence of Mexico had been proclaimed on November 6, 1813. After the brief interlude of Iturbide, emperor under the name of Augustine I and who was overthrown by General Santa Anna, the republic was proclaimed on December 16, 1823. In 1836 , Texas secedes (Fort Alamo). In April 1837, General Anastase Bustamente refused to compensate the French planters and industrialists whose interests had been despoiled. The most amusing case is that of a pastry chef from Vera Cruz who will give the name of "war of the cakes" to the military intervention aimed at preserving French interests in Mexico. The French bombed the fort of Saint-Jean d'Ulloa on November 27, 1838. A Franco-Mexican peace treaty was signed on March 9, 1839. These events were precursors to the French intervention in Mexico under Napoleon III (1862-1867).
