Historical background

MESOPOTAMIA - SELEUCIA ON TIGRIS

(2nd - 1st century BC)

Seleucia of the Tigris was founded by Seleucus I in 312 BC when he regained control of Babylon. Seleucia was located on the Tigris where the canal joins the Euphrates. It was one of the largest cities in the region and it supplanted Babylon and was the main river port of the region. When the Parthians took over the region, they made it their capital. The city remained important under the Sassanids.
