Commentary

Poids lourd. La plus petite dénomination frappée à Nicopolis. Au droit, nous ne semblons pas avoir de légende. La ville ne serait identifiée que par son revers grâce à la mention (près de l’Istrus). Mais le droit est éponyme avec la Niké (la Victoire) pour Nicopolis. Ce type pourrait constituer une émission inaugurale du monnayage sous le règne de Trajan. Au revers, croissant de lune et étoiles se rencontrent souvent sur le monnayage des Sévères. Nous avons un bel exemple de symbole luni-solaire. Semble de la plus grande rareté et manque à tous les ouvrages consultés.

MOESIA - NICOPOLIS

(2nd - 3rd century AD)

Nicopolis, located on the Istrus, a tributary of the Danube, first belonged to the province of Thrace and was then attached to that of Lower Moesia. The coinage of Nicopolis began under Antoninus and lasted until Gordian III. Nicopolis had been built by Trajan to commemorate his victory over the Dacians. Under the Antonines, the coins include the name of the legates (Hegemon) of the province of Thrace when Nicopolis was attached to this province.
