Commentary

For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of thirty-three obverse dies and thirty-seven reverse dies. This denarius is much rarer than general works suggest. In the hoards, only eleven coins were noted, coming from the deposits of Casaleone (1 ex.), San Giulamo (4 ex.), Alvignano (2 ex.), Bourgueil (1 ex.), Gallignano (1 ex.) and Terranova (2 ex.). The copy from COINS 36, No. 334 sold for €470 out of a maximum of €540 with six offers in TTB+!

Historical background

MEMMIA

(56 BC)

Caius Memmius belongs to the senatorial aristocracy. For a long time he was believed to be the grandson of Sylla and consul suffect in 34 BC. He would in fact be the nephew of Pompey, son of C. Memmius, quaestor in 76 BC, finding death the next year. Monetary magistrate in 57 BC, he will be tribune of the plebs in 54 BC..
