bga_223509 - MEDIOMATRICI (Area of Metz) Statère à la tête janiforme, OYOAE, classe IIIc

Ce statère, à première vue un banal représentant de cette série souvent fruste, est en fait tout à fait exceptionnel !
Au revers, en bord de flan, on peut lire assez nettement la légende grecque OUOLe, en majuscule, avec le E minuscule (en latin, on se rapprocherait de OYOAE).
Si cette rarissime variante épigraphique est connue, mentionnée par S. Scheers comme constituant la variété c, aucune photo lisible ne semble disponible. Les deux seuls exemplaires recensés sont le BN. 8944 et le moulage du musée de Bar. Cet exemplaire avec l’épigraphie discrète mais assez nette, rejoint la lecture de Max Werly qui voyait OUOLe (en grec). S. Scheers préfèrerait voir un I à la place du Y.
Cette épigraphie n’a pas été retenue par B. Fischer dans le RIG, pas plus que par les auteurs du Nouvel Atlas.
Ce statère est le second publié, après celui de la BN !.
This stater, at first glance an ordinary representative of this often crude series, is in fact quite exceptional! On the reverse, at the edge of the flan, one can read quite clearly the Greek legend OUOLe, in capital letters, with the lowercase E (in Latin, it would be closer to OYOAE). If this extremely rare epigraphic variant is known, mentioned by S. Scheers as constituting variety c, no legible photo seems to be available. The only two examples recorded are BN. 8944 and the cast from the Bar museum. This example with the discreet but quite clear epigraphy, agrees with the reading of Max Werly who saw OUOLe (in Greek). S. Scheers would prefer to see an I instead of the Y. This epigraphy was not retained by B. Fischer in the RIG, nor by the authors of the New Atlas. This stater is the second published, after that of the BN!
