Commentary

La société de géographie fondée en 1821 regroupe 55 prix, le prix Léon Dewez crée en 1891 vient récompenser les travaux géographiques sur les diverses parties du monde. Cette médaille vient récompenser ses explorations et ses travaux lors de l’expédition vers l’actuel centrafrique. A l’époque, l’ouest de la centrafrique demeurait totalement inconnue. Son exploration ne fut réalisée qu’entre 1890 et 1910. La mission Clozel consistait à trouver une voie d’accès vers le Tchad. En septembre 1893, le Comité de l’Afrique française a décidé d’organiser une nouvelle mission qui fut confiée à Clozel, l’ancien adjoint de MAISTRE. Elle devait “pénétrer le plus possible en pays musulman et à l’ouest”.
The Geographical Society, founded in 1821, has 55 awards. The Léon Dewez Prize, created in 1891, recognizes geographical work on various parts of the world. This medal recognizes his explorations and work during the expedition to what is now the Central African Republic. At the time, the west of the Central African Republic remained completely unknown.
