Historical background

Maximin II DAIA

(1/05/305-04/313) Caius Galerius Valerius Maximinus

Caesar (1/05/305-310)

Maximin II, nephew of Galerius, Caesar became May 1 305. After the death of Constantius I Chlorine 25 July 306, he did not become august and remained subject to Galerius. Following the conference Carnuntum in November 308, it is only Filius Augustorum while Licinius I becomes directly august. It was not until the following year that Maximin II will take the title of august, as recognized by Galerius only 310. After the death of Galerius in May 311, it is the oldest surviving tetrarchs. He quarreled with Licinius and Constantine, while he tries to get closer to Maxence. After 312, Licinius turns against him and he is finally removed in 313.
