Historical background

MAXIMIANUS HERCULIUS

(+310)

Restitution of Maxentius

Maximian, after a tumultuous life, was eliminated or committed suicide at the beginning of the year 310 after trying to assassinate his son-in-law, Constantine I. It was Fausta, Maximien's daughter, who revealed the plot. Constantine used the image of his father-in-law, still very popular among the military, to restore his memory and bring him into the Constantinian family. Maximian was the grandfather of Constantine II, Constantius and Constantius II. Maxentius, who was definitely angry with his father from 307, restored his father's memory, thus opposing his assassin in his eyes, Constantine, his implacable enemy..
