Historical background

MAXENCE

(28/10/306-28/10/312) Marcus Aurelius Valerius Maxentius

August (04/307-28/10/312)

Maxentius, son of Maximian, was proclaimed Caesar 28 October 306 in Rome, and took the title of Filius Augustorum. In 307, he was proclaimed august, controlling Italy and Africa with the help of Maximian. In 308, he lost Africa with the revolt of Alexander. At the conference of Carnuntum, he was declared a public enemy, but managed to stay in Italy until 312, the year of his defeat at the Milvian Bridge, near Rome, where he met his death by drowning in the Tiber.
