Commentary

Stylized example on the obverse. On the obverse, we have two types of ornamentation on the Diadem, a cross or trifoliate clover and two very different types of busts, the first coarse and the second fine. Our example belongs to the first group. It was overstruck on an older type. This type seems rarer than general works suggest.

Historical background

MAURICIUS TIBERIUS

(08/13/582-11/22/602)

Maurice succeeded his father-in-law Tiberius II. After great victories over the Sassanids, he suffered many setbacks in the Balkans and could not prevent the installation of the Slavs and Avars. A military plot overthrew him in 602. He was assassinated while trying to take refuge with Chosroes II.
