Coments on the condition:
Flan large et irrégulier avec les types bien complets. Frappe un peu molle par endroits, avec une patine sombre dans les champs mais plus claire sur les reliefs

Obverse description : Tête stylisée à gauche, les cheveux en arrière et une croisette bouletée devant le visage ; grènetis.

Reverse description : Croix ancrée, de part et d'autre V et II ; deux globules de chaque côté du sommet de la croix.
Commentary
Ce type de tête a longtemps été attribué à Mayence, mais les provenances multiples dans le sud-est de la France font que l'attribution à Marseille s'est progressivement imposée.
Les deux exemplaires déjà proposés, MONNAIES 32, n° 993 et 41, n° 1657 ont été vendues 420 et 400€ avec respectivement 5 et 2 ordres.
Mais cet exemplaire est le premier que nous avons avec la tête à gauche !.
This type of head was long attributed to Mainz, but the multiple provenances in the south-east of France meant that the attribution to Marseille gradually became established. The two examples already offered, COINS 32, no. 993 and 41, no. 1657, were sold for €420 and €400 with 5 and 2 orders respectively. But this example is the first we have with the head on the left!

MEROVINGIAN COINAGE - MARSEILLE (MASSILIA)
(7th - 8th century)
Childeric II abolishes the minting of gold in Gaul in favor of silver coinage. The Marseilles mint struck silver coins after the assassination of Childeric II in 675 and probably until the beginning of the reign of Pepin the Short. The workshop had an important production of which the only treasure of Nice-Cimiez delivered a great variety of types. Five patricians succeeded one another at the head of the city, Ansedertus, Nemfidius, Antenor, Metranus and Abbo. In 736, Provence was attached to the kingdom of France and Charles Martel put an end to the patriciate. No copper production in Marseilles seems attested. For lack of text, the dates of these patrices are not known.
