(1822-1859)
Moulay Abderrahmane ben Hicham (1778-1859) was the nephew and successor of Sultan Moulay Slimane. He succeeded him in 1822. During his reign, the traditional activity of piracy was severely repressed by the European powers. He supported Abd el-Kader in his fight against the French in Algeria but had to renounce it following his defeat against General Bugeaud at the Battle of Isly in 1844..
