Commentary

It was on Pheasant Island, on the Bidasoa River on the border between France and Spain, that the Peace of the Pyrenees conferences took place. On the occasion of this peace, concluded on November 7, 1659, the conditions for the marriage of the king and Maria Theresa, Infanta of Spain, were established. This example illustrates the type in the Guéant Prieur

Historical background

MARIE-THÉRÈSE D'AUTRICHE

Marie Thérèse (1638-1683) is the daughter of Philippe IV of Spain and Elisabeth of France, the daughter of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis. She was born in 1638, like her cousin the King, to whom she was engaged following the Treaty of the Pyrenees of November 7, 1659. She married him on June 9, 1660 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz and had six children , of which only one survived, Louis, the Grand Dauphin (1661-1711). She died on July 30, 1683. Louis XIV secretly remarried in second marriage with the Marquise de Maintenon in 1683 (1638-1719).
