Historical background

MARIE-ADÉLAÏDE OF SAVOY, DUCHESS OF BURGUNDY HEIR APPARENT AND MOTHER OF FUTURE LOUIS XV

(1685-1712)

Marie-Adélaïde de Savoie is the daughter of Victor-Amédée II, Duke of Savoie; she was born in Turin in 1685. On August 23, 1696, a treaty was concluded in Turin specifying that she would be raised in Versailles before marrying Louis de France, Duke of Burgundy, and grandson of Louis XIV. Their marriage was celebrated in Versailles on December 7, 1697. From 1703 to 1706, her lover was the Marquis de Nangis, then the Marquis de Maulevrier, son of a brother of Colbert. In 1711, she took the title of Dauphine for a short time because she died in Versailles in 1712, six days before her husband. She is the mother of the future Louis XV, king of France from 1715 to 1774.
