Exemplaire sur un flan large bien centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait. Joli revers


Obverse legend : D N MARCIA-NVS P F AVG.
Obverse description : Buste diadémé, casqué et cuirassé de Marcien face, tenant de la main droite la haste qui repose sur l'épaule et de la gauche, un bouclier orné d'un cavalier chargeant à droite (N’a) ; diadème perlé.
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Marcianus Pius Felix Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Marcien pieux heureux auguste).


Reverse legend : VICTORI-A AVGGG/ -|*// CONOB.
Reverse description : Victoria (la Victoire) drapée, debout à gauche, tenant une longue croix perlée de la main droite ; une étoile à huit rais dans le champ à droite.
Reverse translation : “Victoria Augustorum”, (la Victoire des augustes).


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Casque avec plumet. Diadème perlé orné d’un cabochon gemmé. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Bouclier orné d’un cavalier galopant à droite, terrassant un ennemi (stylisé). Exemplaire sans marque d’officine.

Historical background



Marcian was born in Thrace in 392. On the death of Theodosius 28 July 450, he was chosen by Pulcheria he married. He fought effectively against the Huns and refused to pay tribute. He summoned the Council of Chalcedon. After a peaceful reign of six years, he died in January 457.
