Commentary

(BG. VII, 81 ; VIII, 2, 24, 38, 46 à 48 et 50).
For this type, Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of less than thirty coins for the obverse and thirty coins for the reverse. This denarius presents the effigies of two of the main actors of the Gallic War: Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) and Mark Antony (83-30 BC). Antony was related to Caesar through his mother Julia. He was one of Caesar's faithful lieutenants during the Gallic War. He participated in the siege of Alesia and occupied Bibracte. He took part in the repression against the Bellovaci and triumphed over Commius. Quaestor in 51, he was later elected augur. (BG. VII, 81; VIII, 2, 24, 38, 46 to 48 and 50)

Historical background

MARK ANTONY AND JULIUS CAESAR

(43 BC)

Antoine, born in 83 BC, is a loyal supporter of Caesar. He served under his orders in Gaul, was among his lieutenants during the civil war (49-45 BC) and held his first consulship with him (44 BC). Upon his death, Antoine receives an "Imperium maius" for the Gauls (Cisalpine and Transalpine). After the siege of Mutina and the murder of the two consuls (Pansa and Hirtius), he formed the second triumvirate with Octave and Lepidus and favored the proscriptions (death of Cicero) (43 BC). He had Caesar deified in 42 BC and participated in the battle of Philippi, where Cassius and Brutus were killed..
