Exemplaire sur un petit flan ovale et bombé, bien centré des deux côtés. Beau buste du Crist. Frappe faible au revers. Patine marron foncé

Obverse description : Le Christ nimbé trônant de face, vêtu du pallium et du colombium, tenant les Évangiles des deux mains ; une étoile de caque côté.
Obverse translation : (Jésus Christ).

Reverse


Reverse description : Manuel Ier couronné par la Vierge Marie debout de face ; Manuel Ier est couronné, vêtu du divitision et du loros, tenant l’akakia de la main gauche et le labarum de la main droite ; la Vierge est nimbée voilée, vêtue de pallium et du maphorium orné ; elle couronne de la main droite, Manuel et bénit de la main gauche.
Reverse legend : MANuHA - DESPOTH/ MR/ QU
Reverse translation : (Manuel desposte/ la mère de Dieu).

Commentary


Poids extrêmement léger. Une étoile de chaque côté du Crist. Six petits globules visibles sur le plastron de Manuel Ier, quatre sur le divitision et cinq globules posés en carré avec un annelet pointé.
Extremely light weight. One star on each side of the crystal. Six small globules visible on the breastplate of Manuel I, four on the division and five globules placed in a square with a pointed annulet.

MANUEL I KOMNENOS

(8/04/1143-24/09/1180)

The very long reign of Manuel I marks the last Byzantine burst before the fall of 1204. Impregnated with Latin culture, he had to face the second crusade (1147-1149), led by Louis VII of France who, with the help of the Normans of Roger II, attacked Byzantium. The Normans seized part of Greece (Corinth and Thebes). Louis VII had to return to France just before divorcing Eleanor of Aquitaine. Manuel was the son-in-law of Conrad III and Frederic Barbarossa was his sworn enemy. The Emperor of Germany urged the Sultan of Iconium to revolt against the Byzantines who were crushed at the battle of Myrioscephalon in 1176. After a reign of 37 years, Manuel died out in 1180, leaving Byzantium weakened, easy prey for Christians and Muslims.
