Historical background

MAMILIA

(c. 190 BC)

The years that followed the end of the Second Punic War are sometimes poorly understood. They are marked by the conflict between Rome and Antiochus III the Great, king of Syria (223-187 AC.) and Philip V of Macedonia. Antiochus suffered several checks in Greece at Thermopylae and at sea at Corcyra before being crushed at Magnesia (190 AC.). The war spread to the whole of the East. In Italy, after their victory over the Boii, Plaisance and Cremona were repopulated by Roman settlers. In 189 BC, the Roman colony of Bononia (Bologna) was founded.
