Historical background

MALAYSIA - BRITISH NORTH BORNEO

(20/06/1837-22/01/1901)

Victoria I (1819-1901) was the daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, and Victoria of Saxe Coburg. She succeeded her uncle William IV in 1837. North Borneo has been a possession of the English crown since 1877-1878, ceded to the British North Borneo Company in 1882. In 1888, it became a British protectorate. In 1941, the Japanese invaded this territory which again became an English colony from 1946 to 1963 when this territory incorporated the Federation of Malaysia.
