Historical background

MAINE - COUNTY OF MAINE - HERBERT I ÉVEILLE CHIEN

(1014/5-1032/5)

At the beginning of the 11th century, Maine was under the influence of Anjou de Foulques Nerra (987-1040) to whom Hugues III of Maine (992-1014/5) paid homage as a vassal. Robert II the Pious (996-1031), King of France, no longer has any influence or power over this region. Herbert I Éveille-chien of Maine remained under Angevin domination during a reign made difficult by the struggle between him and the bishop of Le Mans. It was Hugh IV (1032/5-1051) who freed himself from Angevin tutelage.
