Historical background



Magnentius was proclaimed on January 18 350, thanks to its speed and significant diplomatic activity that allowed him to take over Britain, Gaul, Italy and the Balkans, but he only succeeded not to be recognized by Constantius II. Magnence suffered a severe defeat at Mursa in September 351. Forced to retreat, he loses Italy the following year before seeing Gaul invaded by General Constance. Beaten Mount Seleucus near Gap, he committed suicide in Lyon August 10 353.
