Commentary


Portrait légèrement stylisé, mais de bon style. Cette double maiorina appartient à la deuxième réduction pondérale intervenue au cours de l’année 353 qui vit passer la taille du 1/36 L. au 1/48 L. avant de finir de 1/72 L.
Slightly stylized portrait, but in good style. This double maiorina belongs to the second weight reduction that occurred during the year 353 which saw the size go from 1/36 L. to 1/48 L. before ending at 1/72 L.

Historical background


MAGNENTIUS

(01/18/350-08/10/353)

Magnentius was proclaimed on January 18, 350 thanks to his speed and significant diplomatic activity which allowed him to seize Brittany, Gaul, Italy and part of the Balkans. However, he failed to gain recognition from Constantius II. Magnentius suffered a severe defeat at Mursa in September 351. Forced to retreat, he lost Italy the following year before seeing Gaul invaded by the generals of Constance. Beaten at Mount Seleucus near Gap, he committed suicide in Lyon on August 10, 353.
