Reverse description : Aigle debout à droite, les ailes déployées, la tête et la queue tournées à gauche, tenant dans son bec une forme de couronne ; O dans le champ à gauche sous la couronne, buste radié, drapé et cuirassé de Shamash à gauche entre les pattes de l’aigle.

Commentary
L’officine O est l’une de celles qui frappent pour Julia Domna mais dont le gros de la production sera consacré à Macrin.
Macrin ne quitta en réalité jamais l’Orient et il est plus que probable que de nombreux graveurs qui devaient travailler sur des coins de tétradrachmes le virent réellement. Pour ce type, on rencontre plusieurs graveurs qui sont souvent intervenus pour d’autres officines.
L’attribution des séries au Shamash à Emesa est plus que probable mais la découverte d’une émission de présentation qui viendrait le confirmer serait la bienvenue.
Les émissions sont réparties en officines, terme impropre car il ne s’agit certainement pas d’officines au sens d’une répartition de la production. En effet, certaines lettres ou symboles se retrouvent sur de très nombreux exemplaires, d’autres sur une poignée : on doit donc plutôt réfléchir en source de financement, réparti probablement entre différentes familles ou institutions locales.
On note que les sigma sont gravés en C.
Dans la base TSP maintenue par Michel Prieur, soixante et onze exemplaires sont maintenant répertoriés. Notre exemplaire, qui provient de la trouvaille dite de Jordanie 1930, est le 1004_056.

Macrinus never actually left the East and it is more than likely that many engravers who were to work on tetradrachm dies actually saw him. For this type, we meet several engravers who have often worked for other offices.
The attribution of the series to Shamash in Emesa is more than likely, but the discovery of a presentation program that would confirm this would be welcome..
The emissions are distributed into pharmacies, an improper term because these are certainly not pharmacies in the sense of a distribution of production.. Indeed, some letters or symbols are found on a large number of examples, others on a handful: we should therefore rather think about the source of funding, probably distributed between different families or local institutions..

MACRINUS

Macrin was born in 164 in Cherchell in Mauretania. He is not a senator, but a knight, of indigenous (Moorish) origin. Procurator of the "res privata" (private fund of the Emperor) of Caracalla, he then became prefect of the Praetorium from 212. After the assassination of Caracalla on April 8, 217, he was acclaimed emperor on April 11. He will never come to Rome and remains in Antioch. He deifies Caracalla, but exiles Julia Domna, who lets herself die. He takes the title of Severus to rally the supporters of the Severian family to him and gives the prænomen of Antoninus to his son, Diadumenian, promoted to Caesar. Trying to conciliate everyone, he runs into the army, which misses Caracalla. Soldiers quartered in Emesa proclaimed Elagabalus on May 16, 218. Defeated in June, Macrinus fled. Hearing of the death of Diaduménien, he tries to commit suicide by throwing himself from his chariot and is finished off by his own soldiers..
