Historical background

MACEDONIA - POTIDEIA

(5th - 4th century BC).

The city of Potidae was founded around 600 BC by Evagoras. The city was surrounded by imposing walls and had two ports which controlled the Thermaic Gulf. During the Greco-Persian Wars, Potidea was part of the Persian system before joining the Greek alliance in 479 BC. It then joined the Delian League. They left the League in 432 BC. The city was besieged for two years before being taken. The Athenians drove out the inhabitants and replaced them with a cleruchy until the fall of Athens in 404 BC. The city then joined the Chalcidic League in 380 BC before being conquered by Philip II of Macedon in 356 BC.
