Exemplaire sur un flan ovale bien centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait inhabituel d’Athéna, légèrement stylisé. Joli revers de style fin. Patine de collection ancienne

Obverse description : Tête casquée d'Athéna à droite, coiffée du casque corinthien à aigrette, orné d'un serpent sur l’accroche près de la visière ; les cheveux tombant sur la nuque en mèches mêlées.

Reverse description : Niké debout à gauche, les ailes déployées, tenant de la main droite une couronne et de la gauche la stylis ; dans le champ à gauche, un foudre, au-dessus, un monogramme.
Reverse legend : BA-SILEWS/ FILIPPOU(DI).

Commentary


Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire du British Museum (MP. p. 422, n° P138, pl. XVI), provenant de la Banque d’Angleterre en 1865. C’est le troisième exemplaire signalé. Ils sont tous de même coin de droit, mais le coin de revers semble différent des autres exemplaires recensés.

Coinage in the name of Philipp III and Alexander type

Philip, son of Philip II and the half-brother of Alexander, was not entirely in his right mind. On the death of the conqueror and faced with the lack of power, in order to maintain the fiction of the unity of the Empire, he was proclaimed king, but in fact he had no power. He was assassinated at the instigation of Olympias, Alexander's mother, in 316 BC.
