Très bel exemplaire, centré des deux côtés. Superbe portrait d’Héraklès. Joli revers. Patine grise avec des reflets dorés

Reverse description : Zeus aétophore, les jambes croisées, assis à gauche sur un siège sans dossier, nu jusqu'à la ceinture, tenant un aigle posé sur sa main droite et un long sceptre bouleté de la gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, un cône surmonté d’un astre à huit rayons ; couronne sous le trône.

Commentary


Cet exemplaire manque dans le remarquable ouvrage de M. J. Price (MP. 509-523). L’auteur a assimilé deux variétés différentes (MP. 514 et 519). En revanche dans le trésor de Meydancikkale, G. Le Rider a bien isolé cette variété de monogrammes sous le numéro 370 (pl. 16).

(319-297 BC)

Coinage in the name of Alexander III the Great type

Cassander, the first of the Epigones, succeeded his father, Antipater, in 319 BC. He allied himself in 315 with Seleucus, Ptolemy and Lysimachus to fight Antigone and Demetrius. In 311 BC, he killed Roxane and Alexander IV. In 305 BC, he assumed the title of king. Cassander triumphed over Antigone at Ipsos where the latter died. He was killed in 297 BC with his son Philip IV and it was his son Antigone Gonatas who finally succeeded him in 283 BC on the death of Demetrius Poliorcetes.
