Historical background

MACEDONIA - SKIONE

(480-422 BC)

Scioné was located on the southern coast of the Pallène peninsula between Mendé and Cape Canastréon according to Ernest Babelon. Scioné is said to have been founded by Protesilaos returning from the Trojan War. In fact the city was founded by settlers from Euboea. The city entered the orbit of Athens after the capture of Eion in 470 BC. It paid a tribute between six and fifteen euros to the League. At the beginning of the Peloponnesian War, Scione, like the other cities of Chalkidiki, revolted against the Athenian hegemony. She supported Brasidas in 424 BC, but the city was besieged and taken two years later by Nicias and the inhabitants killed or sold into slavery and an Athenian cleruchy replaced her. It was not until the fall of Athens in 404 BC that the inhabitants returned to the city. Scione participated in the Chalcidice league from its foundation in 392 BC and was part of it until the end of the league in 347 BC, but the city never regained its importance..
