Exemplaire frappé sur un petit flan, mais parfaitement centré des deux côtés avec un beau portrait. Le revers est de haut relief avec tous les détails de la Niké bien visibles

Obverse description : Tête casquée d'Athéna à droite, coiffée du casque corinthien à aigrette, orné d'un serpent ; les cheveux tombant sur la nuque en mèches mêlées ; sous le cou, un foudre.

Reverse description : Niké debout à gauche, les ailes déployées, tenant de la main droite une couronne et de la gauche la stylis ; dans le champ à gauche, un griffon.

Commentary
Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire du musée d’Athènes (M. Thompson, NS. 16, p. 45, n° 19c, pl. 21). Cet exemplaire présente plusieurs particularités : au droit sous le cou, nous avons un foudre, ce qui est très rare sur le monnayage d’Alexandre ; au revers, le nom est placé devant la Niké. L’unique exemplaire signalé provient du musée d’Athènes.

Alexander III the Great is the son of Philip II of Macedon and Olympias. He was born in 356 BC, when Philip's horses were triumphing at the Olympic Games. On the death of his father, who was assassinated in 336 BC, he became king of Macedonia at the age of twenty. He immediately crushes the Thebans and razes the city which had revolted. In 334 BC, he went to Asia and, after the victory of Granicus, set out to conquer the Achaemenid Empire, which would take him to Persepolis, then to the gates of India. Back in Babylon, in 325, he married Roxane who gave him a son. Two years later, he died without having completed his work, aged thirty-three..
