MACEDONIA - MACEDONIAN PROVINCE - THESSALONIKI

After the capture of Perseus at Pydna in 168 BC by Paul-Émile, Greece was separated into four republics. Thessaloniki, the ancient Therma, the current Salonika, received its name in honor of the wife of Cassander, the half-sister of Alexander III the Great in 315 BC. The city was the capital of the second republic. After Andriscus' revolt, Macedonia was heavily taxed and treated as a conquered province. Under the Empire, it became a senatorial province. Thessaloniki became the administrative and financial capital of the province.
