Historical background

MACEDONIA - PAROREIA

(185-168 BC)

We have very little information about Paroreia. Pliny the Elder (HN.4/35) evokes a people from Epirus or Macedonia (Paroræi). Paroreia is also mentioned by Livy in Roman History (39/27 and 42/51) (Paroreia) as a part of Thrace or a neighboring country of Thrace. In fact, this city of Macedonia has sometimes been confused with Parorea, city of Achaia, about their inhabitants, by Pliny the Elder (HN.4/22). The autonomous coinage of the city seems to have started after the battle of Cynoscephali (197 AC.) and the proclamation of the freedom of the Greek cities by Flaminius in Corinth the following year. The coinage does not seem to have survived the fall of the Macedonian kingdom after Pydna in 168 BC..
