Commentary

For this type, it is very difficult to determine die links. The coinage, although not abundant, includes a significant number of obverse dies. Our reverse is very particular, the square is not represented in “mill wings”, but in a hollow square divided into four parts

Historical background

MACEDONIA - NEAPOLIS

(6th - 5th century BC)

Neapolis, colony of Thasos was founded in the 6th century BC. The city was located at the foot of Mount Pangea, on the mainland, on the opposite side to its metropolis, Thasos. It thus controlled the routes of penetration towards Thrace. As Neapolis was the natural lock of the very rich mines of Pangea, it passed successively under Athenian control from 463 BC, then under that of Philip II of Macedon during the expedition of 358-357 BC. BC and the capture of Amphipolis.
