Historical background

MACEDONIA - ARGILOS

(5th century BC)

Argilos is said to have been founded in 655/654 BC by settlers from the island of Andros and would thus be the oldest Greek colony on the Thracian coast in the region of Strymon and Pangea. Located at the mouth of a rich mining region, the city experienced significant economic development and is at the origin of the foundation of the colonies of Tragilos and Kerdilion. The foundation of Amphipolis marked the beginning of its decline.
