Commentary

This LVG legend ensures the attribution to Lyon. Episcopal deniers from Lyon are relatively rare, but very varied. Jean Lafaurie attributes these deniers to Bishop Godinus (circa 688-701) because of the retrograde G attached to one of the arms of the cross on the reverse.

Historical background

LYON (LUGDUNUM)

(7th-8th centuries)

The Merovingian coinage of Lyon is broken down into Roman imitations, triens of Frankish kings, coins and a large series of triens "struck in Forez and Vivarais during the Saracen occupation" (divided into three groups). With regard to money, a denarius is in the name of Rognoaldus otherwise, all denarii are episcopal. These denarii are characterized by the legend LV(G) and a cross confined to the letters EPS.
