Historical background

LUXEMBOURG - DUCHY OF LUXEMBOURG - WENCESLAUS I

(1353-1383)

Wenceslas I was the son of Jean l'Aveugle, Duke of Luxembourg. He married Joan of Brabant in 1352 and he became by this alliance Duke of Brabant jointly with her from 1355. Wenceslas was also the brother of Emperor Charles IV who erected the county of Luxembourg to the rank of duchy in 1354. Wenceslas died in 1383 childless, leaving the administration of the Duchy of Luxembourg to Wenceslas II (1383-1388), his nephew and the son of Emperor Charles IV. The administration of the Duchy of Brabant was entrusted to his wife, Jeanne, who died in 1406.
