Historical background

LUXEMBOURG - COUNTY OF LUXEMBOURG - HENRY IV OF LUXEMBOURG

(1288-1309)

Henri IV of Luxembourg was born around 1275, probably in Valenciennes. From the status of simple count, he was elected Emperor of Germany in 1308 under the name of Henry VII. In 1309, he placed his son Jean, known as "the blind man", at the head of the county of Luxembourg. The following year he succeeded in adding Bohemia to the Empire; he instituted his son John there as king. Emperor Henry VII died on August 24, 1313 at Buonconvento, near Siena. The county of Luxembourg was raised to the rank of duchy in 1354. Several members of the Luxembourg family acceded to the imperial throne after Henry VII: Charles IV (1347-1378), Wenceslas IV (1378-1400) and Sigismond (1410-1437).
