Historical background


LUCANIA - PAESTUM

(268-89 BC)

Lucanians seized Poseidonia around 400 BC and altérèrent name in the form of Paistom. The Romans managed to escape the city to its Lukan influence and refondirent under the name of Paestum in 273 BC giving it the Roman law. Paestum was a faithful ally of Rome during the two Punic Wars (268-241 AC) and (221-202 AC). The city helped the Romans when Tarentum was besieged by Hannibal. The city had received the right to mint coins of bronze and preserved until the beginning of the empire. She was famous for its temples of Poseidon and Hera.
