Ces petits jetons, qui furent probablement jetés à la foule lors de l’inauguration, reprennent la tradition des Romains.
Les empereurs romains frappaient des monnaies spécifiques, les quinaires, du diamètre et de l'aspect de notre jeton, qui servaient lors des largesses impériales, jetées au peuple. Ces jetons de propagande tentaient de faire dans l’esprit du public le lien - difficile - entre le roi podagre et le bon roi Henri.
These small tokens, which were probably thrown to the crowd at the inauguration, follow the Roman tradition. Roman emperors minted specific coins, the quinarii, of the same diameter and appearance as our token, which were used during imperial largesse, thrown to the people. These propaganda tokens attempted to make the difficult connection in the public's mind between the gout-stricken king and the good King Henry.
