Historical background

LOUIS XV THE BELOVED

(1/09/1715-10/05/1774)

England declares war on France in 1743. The king is at the head of the armies with Maurice of Saxony who takes Courtrai and Ypres in 1744. Lorraine is invaded by the Austrians, Stanislas takes refuge in Metz where the king joins him and falls ill. Maurice of Saxony defeats the English at Fontenoy on May 11, 1745 (English gentlemen, shoot first). François I was elected emperor in 1745. The French took Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and Namur in 1746. The European war was coupled with a colonial conflict in Canada and India. The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle restores the status quo in Europe. It is the beginning of the influence of Madame de Pompadour in 1750 on the Court and the heart of the king. In 1751, Voltaire published the "Siècle de Louis XIV" and d'Alembert the first volume of the Encyclopédie (1751-1772). The Duc de Berry, grandson of Louis XV, future Louis XVI, was born in 1754. 1755 marks the recall of Dupleix who directed the policy of expansion in India. The English attack the French in Canada and Louisiana.
