Commentary
Particularly rare coin and the only one struck on a conversion flan for quarter ecus with palms. Following the capture of Cartagena in 1697, the ships of Jean-Baptiste du Casse brought back a large quantity of silver seized from the Spanish. The main workshops benefiting from this windfall were Nantes, Rennes and Paris, giving rise to issues made on conversion flans. According to our archival research, 28,883 quarter ecus were put into circulation following a single issue on April 12, 1698. The minted weight was 808 marcs 16 deniers 12 grains. For this production, 12 quarter ecus were boxed.
