Commentary
L’ancien château de Louis XIII fut transformé, agrandi et embelli à partir de 1661. Divers architectes comme Louis Le Vau et plus tard François d’Orbay, le Brun et Jules-Hardouin Mansard dirigèrent la construction de la plus magnifique demeure royale de l’Europe, témoin de la gloire grandissante et perpétuelle de Louis XIV. En 1682, le roi s’installa définitivement à Versailles, amenant avec lui la Cour et tous les services du gouvernement. Durant plus de quinze ans, 36 000 hommes furent occupés à bâtir Versailles qui en 1690 se présenta sous sa forme définitive.
The former château of Louis XIII was transformed, enlarged and embellished from 1661. Various architects such as Louis Le Vau and later François d'Orbay, le Brun and Jules-Hardouin Mansard directed the construction of the most magnificent royal residence in Europe, witness to the growing and perpetual glory of Louis XIV.
