Commentary
First half-ecu struck with this effigy. Coin completely absent with this bust from the work French Royal Coins and the Revolution (1610-1794), no. 33140. The bust with a short tie would not have been used on half-ecu until 1674. This coin shows that from 1673, this bust was engraved on the squares of the Bayonne Mint. Indeed, on November 18, 1672, the general engraver, Jean-Baptiste Dufour, deposited with the registry of the Cour des monnaies a punch of the bust of the king with a tie. This punch left for Bayonne on January 7, 1673 (AN, Z1b 348A)
