Commentary
The Vendôme Column was erected in 1810 on the site of the (destroyed) statue of Louis XIV by the architects Jacques Gondouin and Jean-Baptiste Lepère, in imitation of Trajan's Column in Rome, which also features a helical bas-relief. This one, sculpted by Étienne Bergeret, represents the campaign of 1806. Removed during the Restoration, the statue of Napoleon, the work of Antoine-Denis Chaudet, was reinstated by Casimir Perier during the July Monarchy.
