Historical background

LOUIS THE BLIND

(901-905)

Louis, son of Boson V of Provence and Ermengarde, daughter of Emperor Louis II, was born in Autun around 880/883. He recovered Provence in 890. In 901, Pope Benedict IV crowned him emperor, but in 902 he was driven out of Italy by Béranger de Frioul, grandson of Louis the Pious. He took refuge in Provence before attempting to reconquer Italy. On July 21, 905, Louis was taken prisoner at the battle of Verona by Béranger de Frioul who had his eyes gouged out. Louis loses his title of emperor and returns to Vienna, where from 911 and because of his handicap, entrusts the management of his kingdom to his cousin Hugh of Arles. He died in Vienna on June 28, 928.
