Commentary

Of the three examples listed by Georges Depeyrot, two come from the Fécamp treasure. With five dots separating the legend on the reverse and with the long legend on the obverse, this type is comparable to No. 8359 of this treasure, but it comes from different dies.

Historical background

LOTHAIR

(09/12/954-03/02/986)

From 954, Lothaire ceded Aquitaine to Hugh the Great and tried to fight against the rise of feudalism. He ends up falling out with Hugh Capet (duke 956-987, king 987-996), son of Hugh the Great, because he is more powerful than his suzerain. At the beginning of the reign of Louis IV (936-954), a new monetary reform would have changed the size of the denarii to 360 coins per pound of 18 ounces.
