Henri Ier de Guise, dit le Balafré, est né le 31 décembre 1549 et assassiné le 23 décembre 1588 au château de Blois. D'abord prince de Joinville, puis duc de Guise (1563) et pair de France, comte d'Eu et Grand Maître de France. Il avait épousé en 1595, Catherine de Clèves, fille de François, duc de Nevers, et veuve d'Antoine de Crouy.
Il est l'un des bénéficiaires politiques de la Saint-Barthélemy en 1572, chef de la Ligue catholique (1576) durant les guerres de Religion en France. Très populaire, il devint le maître de Paris après la journée des Barricades (12 Mai 1588). Il fut assassiné sur l'ordre d'Henri III lors des États Généraux de Blois.
