LORRAINE - NICOLAS DE MERCOEUR, COUNT OF VAUDEMONT

(1524-1577)

Nicolas de Mercœur, known as Nicolas de Lorraine, born in Bar-le-Duc in 1524 and died on January 23, 1577, was a French nobleman and prelate. He was first Bishop of Metz from 1543 to 1548 and of Verdun from 1544 to 1547, then Count of Vaudémont from 1548 to 1577, Lord of Mercœur from 1563 to 1569, then Duke of Mercœur from 1569 to 1577, Marquis of Nomeny, but above all Regent of the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar during the minority of his nephew Charles III from 1552 to 1559. He was married to Jeanne of Savoy from 1555, then to Catherine of Lorraine from 1569, and then to Margaret of Egmont. He was also the father of Queen Louise of Lorraine-Vaudémont, wife of King Henry III of France..
