Historical background

LORRAINE - HOLY EMPIRE and BISHOPRIC OF METZ - THIERRY I and OTTO I, or OTTO II or OTTO III

(5/3/963-7/11/984)

Thierry is associated here, in the coinage, with members of the Saxe family. Otto I, son of Henry the Birdcatcher, became King of Germany in 936 and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor on February 2, 962 in Rome. His son Otho II succeeded him in 973 and married Theophano, the daughter of the Byzantine emperor. In 983, Otto III succeeded him, the year the Slavs revolted against imperial authority, and he ruled until 995 under the regency of Theophano, his mother, and Adelaide, his grandmother, the wife of Otto I. He died in 1002.
