Historical background

LORRAINE - BISHOPRIC OF METZ - JACQUES DE LORRAINE (62th bishop)

(1239-24/10/1260)

Jacques de Lorraine often had to oppose Mathieu II, Duke of Lorraine (1220-1251). Henri II, count of Bar and ally of the bishop, found death in the Holy Land in 1239, the year of the election of Jacques. The end of his episcopate was more peaceful. Mathieu II was succeeded by a twelve-year-old child on the ducal throne of Lorraine, Ferri III (1251-1303). But, from 1258, war was already brewing between the Bishop of Metz, the Count of Bar and the Duke of Lorraine. The next twenty years were to take place in continual quarrels of which Philippe de Florange (1260-1263), successor of Jacques, will be the victim.
