Historical background

LORRAINE - DUCHY OF BAR - ROBERT

(22/08/1354-12/04/1411)

Robert (1344-1411) is the second son of Henri IV de Bar (1336-1344) and Yolande de Flandre. Yolande was regent for Edward II (1344-1352) until 1348/9. After the death of Edward II, Robert succeeded him, under the regency of his mother until 1354 or 1355. First count from 1352 to 1354, then duke, because the earldom was elevated to a duchy on October 17, 1354, Robert is also Marquis of Pont-à-Mousson from 1354. Robert married in 1364 Marie de France (1344-1404), daughter of Jean-le-Bon and Judith of Bavaria, which did not prevent the Duke from continuing to imitate the coinage of his father-in-law. The Duke of Bar, like his predecessors, fought against the Duke of Lorraine and the Bishop of Metz. Taken prisoner in 1368, he had to pay a ransom of 140,000 gold florins. In 1399, Robert gave the marquisate of Pont-à-Mousson to his son Édouard, who succeeded him under the name of Édouard III (1411-1415). Nearly a million coins were minted between February 20, 1371 and December 23, 1372, very few of which have survived..
